Try pressing and holding any item

Press and hold an item for about half a second — you get a haptic buzz and a highlight, then a menu pops up. Move your finger away to cancel.

What you just saw:Long-pressing an iOS app icon for Delete / Rename / Share, long-pressing an image on Android for Save / Edit / Delete, long-pressing a photo to enter multi-select.

02

What it actually is

Long press is how you handle the case where there is no second screen to put things on. It tucks low-frequency operations into an unobtrusive duration, but it also creates the "how long am I supposed to hold?" confusion, so visual and haptic feedback are mandatory.

When to Use

When it fits, and when it doesn't
Long Press usage recommendations
SituationUse it?
You need low-frequency actions without spending screen spaceYes
You need to enter multi-select modeYes
You need dragging but want to guard against accidental triggersYes
It is the primary actionNo
Users have no idea they can long pressDepends

The duration (usually 500ms) must be signalled: haptics plus a visual change, otherwise users think the tap did not register.

Never let a long press carry the only path to a critical action.

How to tell AI

Three levels of prompt

Add the component name and specifics

Add a long press to list items: after holding for 500ms, fire haptics and open an action menu (Edit / Share / Delete); moving more than 10px or releasing early cancels it.

Don't just say this to AI

Bad → Better

Don't say this to AI

Long press can pop up a menu.

Say this instead

Add a Long Press: start a 500ms timer on pointerdown, clear it once movement exceeds 10px (so scrolling is not hijacked), give both haptic and visual highlight feedback on trigger, position the menu near the press point, and clear the timer on pointerup/cancel.
